National Steel Car, located in Hamilton, Ontario, is the number one railway freight and tank car manufacturer in North America. This company has proven itself in the field of manufacturing and engineering. It was able to last for these many years because it is committed to quality 100 percent. Today, the company is more innovative, diverse, values-driven and dynamic than it was when it started 100 years ago.
National Steel Car is headed by Gregory James Aziz who was born on April 30, 1949 in London, Ontario. He studied at Ridley College and also at the University of Western Ontario where he majored in economics. After graduation in 1971, Greg Aziz went to work with his family’s wholesale food business, Affiliated Foods. For the next 16 years, he was instrumental in increasing his family’s food business. It grew to be one of the major worldwide fresh food importers sourcing its products from Europe and South America. The company also maintained a number of distribution centers across the United States where it was able to supply imported food products in the big wholesale fresh food markets in the country.
However, things changed in the career direction of Greg Aziz. After contributing to the success of his family’s food business, he focused his energies in another field. He started working in investment banking starting in the late 1980s and onwards to the early 1990s. It was in 1994 that James Aziz was instrumental in the acquisition of National Steel Car from Dofasco. This purchase transformed the ailing Canadian company into the leading freight car maker in North America.
By focusing on team-building, sizeable capital investment and sound engineering capabilities, National Steel Car increased its manufacturing capacity from 3,500 cars in 1994 to about 12,000 cars in 1999. To support its massive development campaign, the number of employees working on the company’s manufacturing facilities also increased, from 600 to nearly 3,000 during these years.
